HOW ARKUTA STARTED?

Family Hiking

In October 2019, Matthew (Founder of Arkuta) completed the Ulster Way - a 1000km hiking trail.

The hike was truly inspiring because of the breath-taking scenery and friendships made with others during the trip.

The walk, however, was hindered by a lack of affordable accommodation options, in part due to the closure of Youth Hostels which previously were scattered across the route. Consequently, the only option for affordable shelter was hauling a heavy tent and camping equipment across the entirety of this continuous hike....

....It was on this Ulster Way hike that Matthew started thinking about the next adventure on the island and realized he was coming up against the same pitfalls:

- How can adventures at home become more accessible whilst remaining affordable?

- Wouldn’t it be great if there were simple shelters throughout the UK and Ireland similar to the role that bothies play in the Scottish Highlands?

- Wouldn’t it be great if there was an option for ultra-light backpacking which meant that people didn't have to haul around heavy camping equipment?

...and thus, the idea of Arkuta micro-pods was envisioned!

WHAT WE DO?

At Arkuta we have designed and built the best wooden outdoor micro-pod in the UK and Ireland.

Taking inspiration from Scandanavian interior design and tiny-house construction, Arkuta micro-pods provide comfort and simplicity for the outdoor traveller.

Arkuta micro-pod's are hand-crafted in Broughshane (County Antrim) by woodworkers with over a decade of experience constructing outdoor wooden buildings.

They are made from cedar wood and constructed in a timeless A-frame design. The pods can withstand the harshest weather conditions.  The pod is insulated with the highest quality sheep's wool, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  Unlike other insulation products, sheep's wool can be recycled with minimal harm to the environment.

Each Arkuta micro-pod is fitted with solar lighting to allow them to operate off-grid.  It's compact size means it can easily be installed in those harder to reach beauty spots.

Potentially the pod's most desirable feature is it's value for money. Arkuta micro-pods cost 70% less than traditional glamping pods - which will improve affordability for campsites, landowners, Airbnb hosts and more.
